Tomorrow (8th April) is International Roma Day. Read our post from last year explaining what this is, with resources to find out more.
Every year, SEIN members Romano Lav organise an International Roma Day gathering & parade through Govanhill. This was due to take place on Saturday 11th April this year. Of course, plans have now changed – but there is just as much cause to connect, show solidarity & celebrate this day, even if we can’t take to the streets together.
Read on for an update from Romano Lav of their new plans, and how you can get involved:
What are we doing?
o In the next week we’ll be sharing photos and videos from our past celebrations and some of the work we’ve been doing over the years.
o On Saturday 11 April we’ll be sharing some messages from our Roma Young Team about International Roma Day, followed by a short documentary film our young people made last year and premiered at CineRoma in September 2019 (the UK’s first Roma Film Festival).
What do we need from you?
o We’re encouraging anyone with the means to make their own Roma colours and Roma flags (be creative!) to their windows in solidarity with all of us who are celebrating International Roma Day 2020. Please share your efforts with us and let us know where you are via our social media (we’re just a tag away).
o If you’ve celebrated International Roma Day before why not share your memories, thoughts, and feelings about past years? Again, let’s get photos, posts, and videos online. Tag @romavoice (twitter) or @romanolav (facebook) so we can see and share your experiences! Let’s flood our timelines for #IRD2020 while we’re inside self-isolating or social distancing.
o In the meantime, keep an eye on and share the memories we’ll be posting in the lead-up to Saturday 11 April.
Spread the word
Please share the posters below if you can:
We hope that many of you will join us in solidarity and celebration over the week!
