It was a pleasure to visit Tasnim at Scottish Ethnic Minority Deaf Club (SEMDC) who have recently joined as members of SEIN.
SEMDC are the only organisation of its kind across Scotland and offer support from their base in Pollokshields. As well as ongoing support, advocacy & advise services, they run a group every other Saturday which offers info workshops, activities, cultural events & organised outings in an open & relaxed space with no barriers to communication.
They were happy to share the story of a recent surprise visit from one of their members Shajhan and his wife Panna (pictured above):
The couple called in with a thank you gift and card to express their gratitude for the support they have received with an application to obtain a spouse Visa. The application is a difficult and lengthy process and extremely challenging for Deaf people. SEMDC is delighted to announce that this application and its success is a first of its kind in the Club’s history.
SEMDC would like to extend a very warm welcome to Glasgow and to the Club to Panna and to warmly wish the couple every success and happiness for their future.
Meeting & Training Space
SEMDC are also pleased to announce that their new social enterprise is under way – they will be hiring out both their corporate meeting and training room to local communities.
They were delighted to welcome CEMVO as their very first clients. Mary Sneddon from CEMVO commented: “the staff at SEMDC were extremely welcoming and friendly and the rooms accommodated all our business needs. In addition, they were pleased to offer us the option of a delightful Asian Buffet. I would thoroughly recommend this hire service and wish SEMDC the best of luck in this new venture”
A leaflet with hire charges and additional options will be shared shortly. In the meantime if you are interested in room hire please contact Tasnim by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
